Diamond Information -> Carat weight
Carat weight |
Carat is the basic unit of weight for any gemstone. A carat is subdivided into 100 "points".
For example, a diamond measuring 40 points is 2/5 carat in weight, or 0.40ct. A carat
is 1/5 of a gram. The word carat itself refers to the seed of the carob tree. These
seeds were historically used as the reference weight for precious gemstones. All other
factors being equal, the value of a diamond increases dramatically as the size increases.
For example, a 2ct diamond would typically be priced four to five times as high as a 1ct
diamond sharing the same colour, clarity and cut. Of course, the carat weight alone cannot
determine the true value of a diamond. If a diamond is cut solely to maximize carat weight,
it is likely to have lower quality in the other three C’s.
