Diamond Information -> Diamond Color
Diamond Color
Colour describes the hue contained by the diamond. Typically, the less colour observable in a diamond, the higher it is valued. Indeed, the most sought after colour is ‘colourless’. Diamond colour ranges from clear to yellow with slight hints of greys or browns. Colour is measured by placing the stone face down on a white background, and observing from a side angle.

Colour and Cut are very tightly intertwined. A stone with an excellent cut can appear to be clearer and whiter than its true body colour. The opposite is true as well, with some naturally clear diamonds losing luster and appearing cloudy or grey due to a mediocre cut.
Colour is measured on a scale starting at D-F (Colourless / Fine White), G-J (Near Colourless / White), K-M (Faint Yellow), M-R (Very Light Yellow) to S-Z (Light Yellow). Colour ratings are measured against ‘master stones’ under ideal lighting conditions.
There are some rare exceptions in which colour in a desired feature. This is case with the much sought after blue and pink diamonds, for example.
